Unique and clear among the woodpeckers, the red-headed woodpecker has a bright red criminal covering its head, neck, throat, and top breast. It measures 7 to 10 inches (19 - 25 cm) in length with a long, chisel-like bill. Sexes are similar with white under location contrastive the back, tail, and wings which are dark with a dark-blue or light-green sheen.
The Red-bellied piciform bird (Melanerpes carolinus), is named for a cherry-red small indefinite quantity on the belly. Ironically the red on the belly is rarely observed. It is medium-sized, handsome woodpecker with black-and-white blackball on the back and a bright red cap. This bird, as its kind name indicates, has its roots in the southeastern conjugate States tho' in the 20th century it has extended its range northward and west.
